Primary Motor Cortex

Precentral gyrus, anterior bank of the central sulcus

Agranular cortex with absent or rudimentary layer IV. Characterized by giant pyramidal (Betz) cells in layer Vb — the only cortical area defined by a single neuron type. Can be subdivided into area 4a (anterior) and 4p (posterior) based on receptor architecture. Low cell density with poor lamination compared to sensory areas.
